Training wheels & bedtime stories

Diabetes

I’m sorry for all I do

To make your life living hell

I should be asleep right now

but no, I’m up writing poems about you!

You really behave

When I treat you like a baby

But don’t you understand?

After 25 years

you’re no longer a baby!

You shouldn’t need all this help

Constant hand holding you do

You should be able to take care of yourself

After all I do most days,

You listen here!

I do my best to support you

It’s just that 25 years ago

When you arrived

I didn’t know all that was in store

Sleepless nights, frequent bathroom trips too

Blood sugars that make me so tired

I just don’t know what I’ll do

May I take off the training wheels

Oh dear sweet child of mine,

Maybe you could ride off for a little while

Take a wrong turn.

Oh, did I just say that?

Well maybe just maybe

You might understand sometimes

Why I want you to get lost!

I promise to tuck you in

to your bed each night

I’ll even give you a kiss on your cheek

And tell a bedtime story

just the way you like!

I’m going to let you sleep now as it’s getting very late

Just know I really am here for you

It’s just that sometimes

I need a break!
